Sustainability at Fisherman's Friend

The team at Fisherman’s Friend have, for quite a while, been actively looking at ways and means of improving our process efficiencies, reducing waste and energy usage, and eliminating unnecessary packaging materials as we, like many responsible companies, look to reduce the impact we have on the environment. We also have several projects underway investigating more environmentally friendly packaging materials. However, as we are also firm believers in our duty of care to our customers and ensuring the quality and efficacy of Fisherman’s Friend products, we must first perform stability studies to ensure any new materials and / or processes do not detract from the quality of the finished product.
Positive steps are underway though and we expect to be introducing more environmentally friendly packs into the range very shortly. We hope you will continue to enjoy your Fisherman’s Friends and share the journey with us.

Materials

Fisherman’s Friend is committed to using sustainable raw materials. In 2019 we launched our chocolate flavoured lozenges using responsibly sourced cocoa powder.

Transport

Reducing our carbon footprint is important to us here at Fisherman’s Friend. Where possible we will always source materials from the UK first, just as we do with sugar for our sugar lozenges.

Plastic Reduction

Our ambition is to improve the sustainability of our packaging. That is why in 2020 we replaced 17 tonnes of non-recyclable material with sustainably sourced cardboard.
To go further, in the same year we also introduced a recyclable wrapper for our multi-pack bags. These are currently being rolled out in Europe and the UK. Where we can use our brand to encourage recycling we will.

Cardboard

All cardboard materials used at Fisherman’s Friend are 100% recyclable and FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) Certified which promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. 16.5 million pieces of cardboard were responsibly sourced from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified suppliers in 2020.

Food Safety Standards

At Fisherman's Friend we comply with food safety and quality standards on an ongoing basis.

Water

Fisherman’s Friend is committed to investing in new processes and looking at ways to reduce and reuse our water. We continue to do trials in order to optimise our cleaning processes. We also dry clean our machines where possible. Since 2013 we have made a 70% reduction in wet cleaning using our dry-cleaning processes. We have also invested heavily in an Air Wash solution which allows our machines to be air washed rather than wet washed, thereby reducing our water consumption.

Energy

Fisherman’s Friend is committed to energy reduction. In 2017 we made replacements on our air compressors and catalyst converters in order to reduce wasted energy. Any new machinery we introduce will always be designed to use less energy than the equipment it replaces. Our facility also conserves energy by using LED replacement bulbs and motion sensors throughout the factory.

Packaging

Here at Fisherman's Friend we are continually optimizing our packaging formats in order to reduce packaging material whilst also minimising food waste (introduction of our re-sealable pack added 1 extra year to shelf life).

We are continuing to simplify our material choices and packaging formats as well as using innovative packaging materials to facilitate recycling.

Using less packaging provides an economic and environmental benefit, saving on material transportation and disposal impact. Currently we have several programs that contribute to packaging optimisation and elimination.

Corporate & Social Responsibility

We are committed to ensuring that our business is conducted according to ethical, professional and legal standards and complies with all the laws that regulate them. All groups and individuals with whom we a have business relationship will be treated in a fair, open and respectful manner.
Feedback and performance will be actively sought and customer comments analysed, responded to and where appropriate, acted upon.

Fisherman’s Friend is committed to working with and encouraging our suppliers to uphold the principles in this policy and to adopt similar policies within their businesses.
